NextPlay Advisory began with a simple mission:
To help everyday entrepreneurs see the true value of the business they’ve worked so hard to build.
Most small business owners in Durham (and beyond) don’t know what their business is really worth — or how to prepare for a sale, transition, or succession plan. Who can blame them? Between confusing financial terms, intimidating buyers, and busy day-to-day operations, most owners don’t get the support they need.
That’s where we come in.
At NextPlay, we calculate what your business is actually worth — using Seller’s Discretionary Earnings (SDE), not just EBITDA. This method reflects the true financial benefit you receive as the owner and helps you defend a stronger valuation when talking to brokers or buyers.
Hi, I’m Alex Haylock, founder of NextPlay Advisory.
I’m a finance student at Western University and a member of the Varsity Football team. I’ve always been drawn to business — and over the past few years, I’ve built experience in real estate, financial modeling, and small business planning through projects, competitions, and community work.
But more importantly, I’ve seen first-hand how confusing the world of finance can be — not because it has to be, but because too many professionals make it that way on purpose.
I don’t believe finance is the most complicated subject in the world. But the way brokers and buyers talk about it — using acronyms, ratios, and jargon — can make business owners feel like they’re walking into a negotiation they’re not prepared for.
Even the smartest people can feel lost if they don’t “speak the language.”
That’s why I started NextPlay:
To cut through the complexity, show business owners what their company is really worth, and help them walk into every conversation with confidence.
Whether you’re looking to plan your exit, boost your valuation, or just get a clear picture of your numbers — I’m here to help make your next move your best one yet.
We use SDE, not just EBITDA — so you get a valuation that reflects what you actually earn.
We explain everything clearly. No jargon, no glossing over the details — you’ll know your numbers.
We’re not here to sell you. Our goal is to help you make smart, informed decisions.
